Microsoft Project Server
Microsoft Project Server is the world’s most popular
Multiple Project Management software. Microsoft Project Server extends
the popular Microsoft Project and takes it from an excellent stand-alone
or small team tool to a department-wide or enterprise-wide tool.
Microsoft Project Server provides you with a database to store information
created in your Microsoft Project Schedules and a set of web based and
application interfaces to access the data from single and multiple projects
that resides in that database.
Microsoft Project Server is the glue that integrates Microsoft Project
Professional, SQL Server (database), Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Outlook,
and Microsoft Portfolio Server. Together these applications make up the
Microsoft Project Enterprise Project Management (EPM) Suite. Together
they make up an extensible platform that your company can deploy to achieve
cost-effective, timely completion of projects.
Fast
Facts Regarding Microsoft Project Versions:
There are
three versions of Microsoft Project Server:
- Microsoft
Project Server 2007
- Microsoft
Project Server 2003
- Microsoft
Project Server 2002
Microsoft Project Server 2007
Microsoft Project Server 2007 is the latest and greatest
release. Microsoft Project Server 2007 is the flag ship product of Microsoft’s
vision for the future. In that future the applications become more powerful,
the IT infrastructure becomes increasing complex while the user experience
becomes increasing enhanced and simplified.
Microsoft Project Server 2007 is ideal for those organizations
that want additional power, information integration, better reporting,
better performance AND who are ready to make the appropriate investment
in IT/Project Management personnel and infrastructure.
When upgrading from Project Server 2003 to Project Server
2007 or deploying Project Server 2007 for the first time you’ll
need to consider deploying or upgrading to:
- Microsoft Office 2007,
- Microsoft SQL Server 2005
- Microsoft SharePoint 3.0
- Microsoft SharePoint Server
- Windows Vista
- Windows XP
- Windows Server 2003
- Microsoft Project Professional 2007
- Microsoft Project Portfolio Server 2007
For most organization’s deploying the above will represent a challenge
and migration to some applications may happen before others. Did I mention
that the 2007 release puts additional requirements on the Project Management/IT
Infrastructure? If you deploy Project Server and eliminate or change the
version of one of the Microsoft applications above you’ll have to
adjust the way in which you deploy, the features that will be available
and the way the tools work. The good news is that Schedule Management
Corporation has been there for our clients for the past fifteen years
- will be there to help you every step of the way!
Microsoft Project Server 2003
Microsoft Project Server 2003 is a stable work-horse
that has been around for four years. Nearly an eternity in the “software
release years”. It is highly stable, quality software for managing
and reporting on multiple project data. Its capabilites and short falls
are well known – it remains an excellent project management platform
for organizations with multiple of hundreds of projects managed by hundreds
of project managers.
Project Server 2003 uses a centrally-managed database repository for Microsoft
Project schedules, project issues, project documents, project status reports
and resource data. It integrates with Microsoft Project and Outlook and
comes with a web interface to provide stakeholders throughout your organization
with controlled access to the right project information at the right time.
Microsoft Project Server 2007 is an upgrade to Project Server 2003, it
provides upgrades in performance, features and style from its quality
predecessor Microsoft Project 2003 but there are corresponding changes
in the infrastructure requirements that must be taken into account when
deciding to deploy or upgrade to Project Server 2007.
With Project Server 2003 a typical infrastructure is:
- Microsoft Office 2003 or earlier
- Microsoft SQL Server 2000
- Microsoft SharePoint 2.0
- Windows XP
- Windows Server 2003
- Windows Server 2000
- Microsoft Project Professional 2003
Project Professional
2003 doesn’t work with Project Server 2007
Microsoft Project Server 2002
The 2002 and 2003 release are basically the same. Microsoft Project Server
2003 is essentially a service pack for Microsoft Project Server 2002.
The biggest change is in the stability of your issues, and document data
with the upgrade from SharePoint Services in 2002 to SharePoint 2.0 in
2003.
Project Professional 2002 works fine with Project Server 2003.
Schedule Management Corporation provide everything you'll need to enhance
and right-size your Project Server 2002 or Project Server 2003 deployments.
We can be there to guide and support your upgrade from Project Server
2003 to Project Server 2007 or help you with an entirely new install and
configuration of Project Server 2007.
