Microsoft Project Standard is intended as a stand-alone tool or smaller organization collaboration platform. There are four versions of Microsoft Project Standard with only minor differences between each version.

Microsoft Project Professional is also intended as a stand-alone tool and a smaller organization collaboration platform. The primary difference between Standard and Professional is that you must deploy Microsoft Professional if you want to use other tools from the Microsoft Enterprise Project Management Suite.

Microsoft Project Professional 2007 is required when you deploy Project Server 2007 and Microsoft Project Portfolio Server 2007. Microsoft Project Professional 2003 or Microsoft Professional 2002 is required when you deploy Project Server 2003.

Microsoft Project Professional 2007 is not compatible with MS Project Server 2003 with and MS Project Professional 2003 is not compatible with MS Project Server 2007.
